So he (Jesus) got up from the meal, took off his outer clothing, and wrapped a towel around his waist. After that, he poured water into a basin and began to wash his disciples' feet, drying them with the towel that was wrapped around him.
He came to Simon Peter, who said to him, "Lord, are you going to wash my feet?"
Jesus replied, "You do not realize now what I am doing, but later you will understand."
"
No," said Peter, "you shall never wash my feet." Jesus answered, "Unless I wash you, you have no part with me."
"Then, Lord," Simon Peter replied, "not just my feet but my hands and my head as well!"
John 13:4-9
I love this story. Peter displays his personality beautifully. Jesus is washing the feet of the disciples. Peter is horrified by the thought of Christ washing his feet. Peter tells Jesus there is no way your going to wash my feet…
After Jesus tells Peter he must serve him or he has no part with him, Peter jumps to the other side...He goes to the other extreme, “wash my feet, my hands, and my head!”
I think a lot of time we are like Peter in approach to sin in our lives. We think well it’s all or nothing. We start to sin and we figure, well I started I might as well see it through. This trap we fall into many time has dire consequences, ones we pay for the rest of our lives. The theft only comes to kill, steal or destroy. Sin’s pleasure only last a moment and then robes us of our joy. Sin entices us only steal away our peace. Sin’s intoxicating effects ware off leaving behind destroyed relationships with our loved ones and with God.
We need to be careful of the extremes in our lives...
I will not be posting this weekend, because I will be in Pine Grove with my parents. Well actually Sharon (my wife) and me are celebrating our 19th Anniversary at a bed and breakfast and grandma is watching the children. I’ll post again Sunday night, Monday morning. God bless!
