Humility

The poor in spirit are blessed, for the kingdom of heaven is theirs
~Mathew 5:3 HCSB

Jesus saw the crowds and went up on the mountain, and sat down.  His disciples gathered around Him and He begun to teach.  He would deliver what we know now as the Sermon on the Mount.  The very first thing He thought was the most important.  In fact it is so easy to over look, but if you miss it the rest of the sermon is pointless.  In fact you will not fully understand and you will never live the Christian life the way Jesus wants us to.  The first thing Jesus taught is the poor in spirit are blessed, and the kingdom of heaven is theirs.   It is the humble who trust God.

Humility is the key to a walk with God.  Our greatest example in humility is Jesus Himself.  Being God did not consider equality with God something to use for His advantage.  The Son submitted to the Father’s will.  He didn’t have too but chose to.  He humbled Himself taking on the form of man.  He went from being God in heaven to being confined in flesh, subjected to all its weakness. He emptied Himself and became a slave and was obedient to the point of death, death on a cross.  Jesus humbled Himself.  When I look closely at the life of Jesus and think upon the cross.  Jesus fully God and fully human, took upon Himself my sin, voluntarily out of love, crushes me.  It is in this “crushing”, that I am broken in spirit and I can begin to understand God and declare, “Jesus is Lord!”  Because of Jesus willing sacrifice, God highly exalted Him, and the name of Jesus above all names and every knee will bow and every tongue will confess Jesus is Lord, to the glory of the Father.  It all started with humility, the poor in spirit are blessed!

Lord thank you for saving me!  Thank you for sending your Son Jesus to die for me.  Most of all Lord thank you for giving us an example to follow.  Lord help me to be humble to be poor in spirit and dependent upon you.  Help me understand apart from you I am nothing.  Lord help me to exalt the name of Jesus in my life to others.  Amen
