Walked on Water

“Lord, if it’s You, “Peter answered Him, “command me to come to You on the water.” “Come!” He said.”  Matthew 14:28-29 HCSB

Jesus feed the 5000 and told the disciples to cross the lake without Him.  He went up on the mountain and prayed.  Around three in the morning Jesus walked on the lake out to the men.  When the disciples saw Him on the water they were terrified. Jesus assures them it is He and Peter asks to come to Him on the water.  Peter got out of the boat and walked on water!  We always think Jesus was the only one to walk on water, but in reality there were two, Jesus and Peter. As Peter walked he saw the strength of the waves and started to sink and Jesus came and helped him back up.

I love this story.  I love how Jesus exhausted from the day, went and found strength in prayer.  He walked on the water afterwards and Peter got out of the boat.  Peter walked on water, he asked Jesus to command him to come to Him, and he got out of the boat, and walked on water!  Walking on the water Peter saw the waves and sunk.  How many times in life does God ask us to get out of the boat in faith and trust Him and then we see the waves?  We step out in faith only to sink because of the waves.

We forget who is asking us to get out of the boat and who is already on the water.  Jesus is never going to ask you to do something and then let you fail.  He will always ask you and help you get through the situation to Him, by Him.  He didn’t remove the waves, because He uses them to build our faith in Him.  Peter sunk because he took his eyes off of Jesus and was overwhelmed by the sight of the waves—not the waves themselves.  In any step of faith no matter how big or how small God uses them to build our trust in Him and He will never let you fail as long as you trust Him. After Peter sunk and was helped back into the boat by Jesus the disciples worshiped Him.  In the end Christ was glorified and the disciples believed He was the Son of God.

Lord help us to set out in faith.  Help us to trust You no matter what situation we face.  Lord help us not to look at what we are going through, but help us to keep our eyes on You and You alone.  Lord build our faith in these times so that you get all the glory!  Amen.
