“As for me and my family, we will worship Yahweh.” ~Joshua 24:15b HCSB
Joshua is at the end of his life. He has done all the Lord has asked of him, he has lead the people of Israel. He has lead them into the promise land and they have victoriously conquered. They were able to do this because the Lord fought for them and has provided for them. Now Joshua urges the people to follow God with all of their hearts and not to worship other god’s. Not to turn from the Lord, who has been good to them. He wants them to make a choice to worship the one true God. Joshua makes his choice very clear, “As for me and my family, we will worship Yahweh”.
The choice of who to worship is one we all will make. We all will worship something. Most people will worship themselves. They will put themselves above everything else, even God. Some will worship other god’s, follow other religions. Some will worship possessions, money, sex, power, alcohol, food, and even their kids. But we all worship, the Hebrew word in this verse for worship means ‘to serve’ or ‘enslaved to’. The only thing we are to be enslaved to is God. You cannot have two masters; you have to choose who you will worship. Joshua makes his choice very clear. He and his house will worship Yahweh the Lord. So who or what do you worship in your life? What are you enslaved to. If you do not know Christ you are enslaved to sin and you have no choice, you are a slave to sin. By putting your faith in Christ, the Son can set you free. In Christ we have the choice to follow Him with our whole hearts and to worship Him with our lives.
Lord thank you for setting me free to worship you with my whole heart. Lord today I choose to worship you and to lead my family in worshiping you. I pray you will forgive me where I have fallen short and you will enable me to live a life surrendered to You and You alone. Lord put people in my life who need to know You and give me the boldness to share you today! Amen
